What does fatherhood really mean: characteristics of a Christian father.

This morning in service our pastor preached part 7 of his sermon series entitled "Guidelines for a Christian Household". This entire series has resonated deeply with Jesse and I. Each week we are presented with a biblically based image of a father/mother and husband/wife. Not only has Pastor Martin explored the roles of a man and woman in a relationship but he has given us practical and useful tips on how to put these roles and responsibilities into practice.

I want to share the notes I took from today's sermon. I formatted them into a simple poem. One day when we have a house, I plan to write these words on a scroll and hang them on the wall as a reminder and commitment for our family, and for any visitors to see that when it comes to a creating a Godly household, we mean business.

The sermon was based on Colossians 3:20 and Ephesians 6:1-4

Fatherhood is about responsibility. A father is responsible for the spiritual, emotional, and physical well being of his offspring. Fathers have the primary responsibility for the welfare of the home. The bible presents a clear picture of the roles and responsibilities of the husband and father.

As the spiritual leader of my household I will act as a prophet; speaking the word of God with authority and no fear.
I will teach the word of God to my children and I will warn them of their actions less their lack of wisdom lead them into sin and heartache.
I will educate my children and cultivate their mind.

As the spiritual leader of my household I will act as a priest; standing before God on behalf of my family. I will intercede on their behalf, praying for them and sacrificing my own will for what is best for my family.

As the leader of my household I will act as king; protecting my family from all who would seek to harm them. I will ensure the welfare of my home because I am a husband.

I am a father.
